Where to buy front-end voicemail system?

I am doing some research on an answering system for our doctor's office, which would answer the phone, then transfer callers to appropriate voicemails to leave a message. I would like one that has the option to transfer to a live receptionist to avoid frustration - we are simply looking to simplify procedures in caring for routine calls, like prescription refills, etc. Is there a stand-alone product like this that doesn't require a monthly fee, or going through an answering service? I'm confused by the options, and I don't really see what we're looking for.

1. I would recommend that you take a look at IVM software from NCH. It is a really powerful piece of software that you can use for voicemail, and to route calls as an "auto-attendant" if you connect it to your pbx/phone switch. depending on the phone system that you have in place you might need some hardware to help you connect your system with a computer so you can use the software, but you won't have the monthly fees of an answering service, and you will gain a lot of flexibility.
